Identification:The greater flamingo has dark pink feathers with black primaries and secondaries. The legs are pink and the bill is pink with a black tip.
Habitat:Tropical and subtropical regions, large lakes and lagoons
Diet:Carnivore: aquatic invertebrates, small fish
Reproduction:Mating takes place throughout the year. A pair may have two broods per year, but may not breed each consecutive year. Nests are built out of mounds of mud and other debris. If more than one egg is laid, only one will hatch. Both parents incubate the egg(s) for 28-32 days. Chicks fledge at 75-77 days of age.
Social Structure:Greater flamingos breed in large colonies containing tens of thousands of birds.
Behavior:Greater flamingos are filter feeders, sifting food from the bottom of lakes and ponds. They do not migrate but may change locations in bad conditions. They are often seen resting on one leg – this helps to conserve body heat.
