WHAT ARE ANIMALS?

Whats are animals?

With almost 2 million species defined up to this date, and even more than that waiting to be discovered. Animals have a wide variety of species living on earth. More than a million years these living creators have been adapting and changing the world around them, developing a vast array of different lifestyles in a struggle to survive.

CHARACTERISTICS OF ANIMALS

Most animals can move faster than the other species in this kingdom. whereas many of the animals do not move from place to another for years or even locomote. The combination of muscles and nerves of animals means that they can respond and move at least parts of their body by contracting their muscle fibers. Most of all, Animals produce their energy by consuming food.

THE SCALE OF ANIMAL LIFE

Different body sizes allow animals to live in different ways. whales have few natural predators and the same is true for elephants, The largest land animal. Their massive bodies are high energy consuming because the process food on a very large scale. However they take very long to reach maturity which means they reproduce less in number. 

Insects on the other hand are a very easy prey for many animals. their small body size means they need less energy to live. They breed very fast when they have favourable conditions. Their offsprings can be born to a prodigious rate.

CHORDATES AND INVERTEBRATES

Almost all the world’s largest and most familiar animals are vertebrates- animals with internal skeleton made of bones and cartilage. They include animals on land water and air. despite being very famous and familiar, They are still make up to a tiny majority of the animal species. Most of the animal kingdom is covered by animals that do not have a inner bone and cartilage skeleton. They lack backbone. 

KINGDOMS OF LIFE

Biologist classify all living things into overall groups called kingdom. the members of each kingdom are alike in their fundamental characteristics. The kingdom of life is divided into six different kingdoms. 

ANIMALS: Animals are multicellular organisms that obtain energy by ingesting food. All animals are capable of moving at least some part of themselves and many can move from place to place.

PLANTS: Plants are multicellular organisms that grow by harnessing the energy in light. through a process called photosynthesis. They use this energy to build up organic matter from simple material creating most of the food animals rely on

FUNGI: Fungi are multicellular organisms that grow by collecting energy organic matter which they do not ingest but breakdown externally by making threads that spread throughout their food. many fungi are to little to be seen and some have large fruiting body.

PROTOCTISTS: They are single celled organisms that typically live in water or in permanently moist habitats. their cells are large and more complex than those of bacteria. Some protoctists behave like plants, They absorb sunlight to produce energy. Other called Protozoa are like animals, They survive through consuming food.  

BACTERIA: Bacteria are the simplest independent living things. their cells are prokaryotic in nature that means they lack in membranous organelles. Bacteria survive on different sources of energy like sunlight, organic and inorganic matter.

ARCHAEA: Achaeans are single celled organisms. They use to be classified with bacteria but due to their difference in molecular organization. They are now believed to linked with ancient group of organisms that  are intermediate between the bacteria and eukaryotes.

WARM- AND COLD-BLOODED ANIMALS

Most animals are exothermic which means they are cold blooded. Their body temperature is adjusted according to their environment. In contrast to them mammals and birds are endothermic animals with the ability to maintain their body temperature constant regardless of the conditions of the surrounding. Cold blooded animals are affected by the temperature as they can not maintain it their quality of life decreases as the temperature drops whereas the birds and mammals have no effect of temperature on their quality of life. they can remain fully active even far below freezing point due o their proper insulated body.

INDIVIDUALS AND COLONIES

Majority of the vertebrates function as individuals but sometimes live in big colonies together. The world of invertebrates work in colonies mostly. you will hardly witness any specie to work individually. colonies behave like a single unit. Most of them are static but some under the sea are movable. the largest colony of animals is coral reefs. In these colonies each member is identical but in some they the change their shapes according to the task given to them.

FUEL FOR LIFE

Animals survive on cellular respiration which means they break the organic matter or food into smaller simpler form of units through digestion that are further burned in the cells to form energy. majority of animals are herbivores that eat on plants. Other than them are carnivorous that are living upon other animals. they further include predator that hunt for prey and parasites that live on other living bodies. The omnivorous are those who eat both plants and animals. They include scavengers which eat on dead matter. 

All animals are connected to each other through a food chain regardless of their lifestyle or habits. food chain is a cycle that passes energy from one specie to another. A typical food chain is of 5 stages. it stats from plants  and ends at an animal that has no natural predator. the energy of the final animal is passed to a scavenger by his death and furthermore through decomposition by recyclers that are present on the soil.
